 True Story

In particular, a May 28, 1996, episode at a hotel in Los Angeles leaves an indelible imprint. ******* overdosed on heroin and cocaine and came within spitting distance of his creator.

"I could see myself surrounded by paramedics and I was screaming, 'I'm here! I'm here!' " ******* says. "I felt like, 'Oh my God, I've made a big mistake, this is not what I wanted.' And all of a sudden I felt that surge of coming back to life."

Still, it wasn't until two years later that he sought help, and then only because he was forced to. "I was finally court-mandated to stay sober," ******* says. "It was either that or go to jail. So I went to live in a sober-living house with random urine-testing. It was really humbling. But at the same time, I felt the best I had ever felt in my life."
